$1 Note Bundle 1969 "Commonwealth of Australia"

Reference Number: R# 73

Signatures: Phillips/Randall

Quality: Uncirculated

An original bundle of crisp $1 notes, issued nearly half a century ago.

Page 64 in the first edition of Mick Vort-Ronald's fantastic book on Australian paper decimal banknotes states that November 1969 was when the R73 (the Phillips/Randall Commonwealth of Australia $1 note) was first released into circulation.

Interestingly, page 153 in the second edition of the same book on Australian paper decimal banknotes does not list a release date for the R73. Both editions of Mick's book state that these notes were not printed after May 1972.

Exactly why this information was changed is not yet certain, however the stamp on the RBA wrapper for this bundle might give us an idea - the date of July 25th 1969 is about 5 months earlier than the date that Mick had put down in the 1st edition of his book!

What is known is that original bundles from the "Commonwealth of Australia" era are incredibly hard to come by - this is one of perhaps a dozen (of all denominations) from this era that I've seen turn up through auction in the past decade or so.

This particular bundle remains in superb quality - the notes are free of any tone or mis-handling, and retain their original bright paper.

Great to put away for the future.
