Silver Five Coin Proof Set. 2009. Decimal Patterns. Perth Mint. FDC. Mintage - 7,500 sets.

Showcases, for the very first time, both designs used on the 1967 unofficial "Goose" dollar.

When it comes to the themes depicted on many of their commemorative products, it's fair to say that the Perth Mint doesn't always strike a chord with the broader coin collecting community.

The reverse designs used on the silver five coin proof set issued earlier this year will surely be an exception to that rule - the theme of the set draws heavily on a hugely popular chapter in Australia's decimal history - the pattern "Goose" dollar, or more accurately, the unofficial pattern crown struck by the Australian Coin Review in 1967.

I personally believe that five silver proof coins for $169.00 is excellent value for money, particularly when we remember that the designs seen on the coins are the only non-winning designs rejected by the Decimal Currency Design Approval Board to be seen by the collecting public.Let's hope this is the first in a series of sets that celebrate the interpretations of each of the six artists that submitted designs to the Decimal Currency Design Approval Board back in the mid 1960's.
