2009 BABY UNC COIN SET. Blinky Bill the Koala

The first Baby mint coin set to feature our own much loved Blinky Bill!

The children's storybook character of Blinky Bill the koala holds a special place in Australian literary history - the mischievous koala has been a part of Australian bedtime stories for the better part of 70 years, his stories remain so popular that they've never been out of print in Australia that whole time!

An animated movie based on the "new" adventures of Blinky Bill was released in 1992, and an animated tv show also aired on the ABC between 1993 and 1995. Despite these two developments into the modern era, the traditional storybooks, with the original storylines and illustrations by Dorothy Wall are the timless classics that still appeal to parents and children today.

2009 is the first year that the RAM's baby coin sets will feature Blinky Bill - not only is he on the packaging, but he's also on the medallion inside!

Combining the cherished theme of Blinky Bill with the authority and respectability of the RAM's proof coin sets is sure to make this set one that will be treasured for many years to come.

Importantly, the 2009 baby mint coin set also includes the commemorative $1 coin struck with the likeness of Blinky Bill's author, Dorothy Wall. The Australian Dictionary of Biography states that "While later critics have objected to the anthropomorphizing of her [Wall's] characters—animals dressed in trousers, dresses, aprons and bonnets act out suburban domestic situations in a stylized bushland setting—successive generations of children have delighted in the mischievous koala with his 'boyish' characteristics of adventurousness, impudence and curiosity."

I'm sure that there are numerous Australian authors that would be delighted to leave half the legacy that Dorothy Wall has, certainly the 2009 baby mint coin sets have many features that will see them keenly sought as treasured keepsakes for decades to come.
