Australian Unc Coin Set 2009 International Year of Astronomy

Superbly presented, includes the commemorative twenty cent showing a group of stargazers.

The vision of The International Year of Astronomy is apparently to help people "rediscover their place in the universe with a strong emphasis on education, public engagement and involvement from young people of all communities."

Galileo Galilei

Just why 2009 should be the year in which this momentous occasion should be featured on our national coinage may not be clear until you learn that 2009 marks the 400th anniversary of Galileo turning a telescope to the sky!

If you don't already know, Galileo Galilei was an Italian scientist from the 16th century regarded as being anything from "the father of modern observational astronomy"; to "the father of modern physics"; to "the father of science" to "the Father of Modern Science."

The reverse of the commemorative 20¢ coin included in this set features a group of star-gazers against a star-chart backdrop, representing the many thousands of Australians that are amateur
astronomers
.

Special Note - the commemorative $1 for the International Year of Astronomy is only available in UNC condition in the 2009 two-coin UNC set - it's accompanied by an UNC $1 coin featuring the Parkes Telescope on the reverse.

The price of the 2009 six coin UNC set has remined the same as it was in 2008 - since the 2009 proof set is close to 20% more expensive than the 2008 set was, the UNC set has to be great value for money! Not only that, but all 2009 proof and uncirculated coin sets come with a ‘glow in the dark’ post card free from the RAM!
