SOVEREIGN. 1924. SYDNEY MINT. King George V. Uncirculated MS 62. One of the rarer dates in the George V sovereign series, in superb mint state. The George V Large Head series covers both ends of the rarity spectrum - the 1925 Sydney sovereign has one of the highest mintages of the entire series (5.632 million), while the 1920 Sydney sovereign is hands down the rarest of the lot (with just 3 sighted at auction in Australia). The 1924 Sydney is certainly a rare date - it has an original mintage of just 394,000, all of which were delivered to the Commonwealth Bank. I have thought that this meant that none were issued for circulation, and were thus melted down when they arrived in London to pay for our national war debt. Just whether this is the case depends on what the Commonwealth Bank did with them - they do exist, so presumably they were issued for circulation. This date is very seldom seen in Europe, which could indicate that only a modest amount entered circulation in Australia, and that the balance probably was melted. Examples in high grade such as this are incredibly rare given their value - you'd be lucky to see one example a year at auction! $3,750.00
