PROOF SET 1966 Dark Blue Case

A great example of the first Australian decimal proof set.

The introduction of decimal currency in 1966 was a significant event in Australia's transition to a truly independent nation. The adoption of decimal currency meant that not only was the Imperial system of pounds, shillings and pence left behind, but all of the reverse designs featured timeless depictions of Australia's unique native flora and fauna.

Proof coins are the same as those we see in our change, but are struck with specially prepared machinery on specially prepared blanks - the designs always stand out magnificently.

The 1966 proof set is unique in several ways - it is the only one to feature a round (and silver!) 50ユ_ᄁ piece, and is the only one not produced in a sealed plastic container. As a result, many 1966 proof sets have spotted or tarnished coins - sets that include each coin still in pristine condition command a significant premium.

The images should show the coins in this set pretty clearly - what you see is what you get! The surfaces are a little bit dusty, but remain pretty much problem free. The (dark blue) case has a slight mark on the top left corner, apart from that it's still in excellent condition.
