AUSTRALIA 1985 PROOF SET

The first Australian proof set to include a one dollar coin, and the first with the Maklouf portrait of Elizabeth II.

Australia has been producing proof year sets ever since decimal currency was introduced in 1966. Coin collecting was in a boom period in the early 1980's, proof sets were particularly popular.

Proof coins are the same as those we see in our change, but are struck with specially prepared machinery on specially prepared blanks - the designs always stand out magnificently.

The Australian one dollar coin was introduced to the general public part way through 1984, while the mint set was introduced earlier in the year - the 1985 mint set is the first to include a $1 coin.

The Machin portrait of Elizabeth II was seen to be a little dated by 1985, so the switch was made to the more modern portrait by Raphael Maklouf.

The coins in this set are in perfect condition, as is the packaging. It comes with the original protective cardboard outers and certificate.
