SEAMANS UNION, Victoria's Pride, ca 1890, in silver (19mm) (S.573). Stamped "J.Daly" good Very Fine.

A fascinating link to Australia's maritime trade in the late 18th century.

This is one of a small group of medals known featuring the clasped hands emblem of the "Sailors & Brothers".

These small medallets are known with reverses for Victoria and South Australia. It is thought that the reverse design of the spade linked to an anchor probably reflects the role that sailors had in the coal industry.

These medallets are described by James Atkins in "The Coins and Tokens of the Possessions and Colonies of the British Empire" thus: "There is a silver piece about sixpenny size which can scarcely be classed as a token, but which I wish to mention here...",They are also mentioned by William John Davis in "Tickets and Passes of Great Britain and Ireland".

This is the first example of this medallet that we have sighted that has been stamped or impressed with the name of the recipient, surely making it worthy of further research. ,A fascinating link to Australia's maritime trade in the late 18th century.
