1955 Proof Coin Set Melbourne Mint (Shilling to Penny)
Obverse: Elizabeth II to right, legend around
Reverse: Circulating coin designs
This is the first commercial set of QEII proof coins from the Melbourne Mint.
There are several reasons the Australian pre-decimal proof coins struck between 1955 and 1963 remain popular with collectors more than half a century after they were struck:
- They're scarce - no more than a few thousand coins were struck in each year and many were far less than that. This means it's challenging but not impossible to get attractive-looking coins at the right price;
- The series is short and sweet - Australian pre-decimal proof coins struck between 1910 and 1954 are out of the reach of most mortal collectors, so the run between 1955 and 1963 has long been a popular area of focus for many collectors.
- The rarity is known - there are obviously many scarce Australian coins struck for use in circulation in the latter part of the 20ty century, but the thing is the mintage figures aren't always a great guide to just how many are available to collectors. The mintage figure for each and every QEII pre-decimal proof coin is known, which makes things a lot simpler for many collectors.
- They look fantastic - Not only are these coins struck to a far higher standard than the equivalent circulating coins, when they've been carefully stored they retain fantastic lustre and patina.
In the hand, the penny in this set has a deep chocolate lustre, with hints of purple rose.
The surfaces of the silver coins look to be excellent for the period, several tiny spots of patina do not detract.

I've taken my coins to Andrew a few times. Him and his staff are very nice people. Andrew is honest and down to earth. 👍
I have purchased several bulk lots of world coins from Sterling & Currency over the last few years. Not only are the selections I receive great (some duplication is par for the course), but the postage is truly cheap as chips. And I hope to be a customer for many more years. I've certainly never experienced any of the rudeness that other reviewers have mentioned. Read more...
I live on East Coast but prefer dealing with Andrew on the West due to his integrity, knowledge and prices, either buying or selling over many years. You will always do better buying from Andrew if your after quality and "real" coins.... If you take a coin to value and its a fake, he will tell you. If its valuable or mid range, he will be as honest with that valuation. After decades dealing with Andrew (and many other dealers as I have been collecting for well over 40 years), I am of the opinion that Stirling and Currency and particularly Andrew are the best numismatic dealers in Australia . Just purchased a 1966 blue case decimal mint set. Andrew gave me a ring to ensure it had arrived and provided some very interesting and probably unknown information concerning these blue cases imported from South Africa during the apartheid era. Great service and a compendium of knowledge. Thanks! Read more...

Ruby the Ridgeback quite frankly has learned nothing about coins, however contributes by barking at anyone wearing hi-viz.
