Queen Victoria 1861 Gold Sovereign Type II Sydney Mint

Obverse: Type II portrait

Reverse: Australia within wreath

Grade: PCGS MS62

A truly superior example of this early-date Sydney Mint sovereign.

The gold coins of the Sydney Mint were unequivocally effective in converting the wealth of Australia’s first gold rush into durable and portable wealth for the nation. Sydney mint sovereigns were used in trade around the globe, and were universally acknowledged for their purity and accuracy of weight.

The Type II Sydney Mint sovereign series is unequivocally one of the premium series in Australian numismatics - setting the Type I Sydney Mint sovereigns and the Sydney Mint half sovereigns aside, they are the first range of coins that can be collected to build a representative series that captures an important chapter in Australia's economic history.

The 1861 Sydney Mint sovereign has always been very seldom seen in mint-state condition - they turn up via auction once every other year or so, if that.

Intuitively, I believe this rarity places it on a level above many of the key KGV florins and banknotes in mint condition that many collectors have lusted after in recent years.

The market for sovereigns such as this has remained stable for some years now, however I don't believe it's unreasonable to think that the next bull market for Aussie gold coins could see them rise exponentially.

This particular example has a lovely straw-yellow lustre right across both sides, lots of cartwheeling lustre and sharp details.
