Tasmania (early 1900's) 9 Carat Gold Marksmanship Award
Front: Crossed rifles above bullseye, wreath below
Back: Legend in 5 lines, name and hallmark below
Dimensions: 38mm * 30mm | Weight: 5.96grams
This is an early 20th century marksmanship award.
The vendor advised this was presented to a family member who lived in Tasmnia several generations ago - we expect this award was presented to a returning serviceman in Tasmania just after the Great War.
The Queenstown Rifle Club may no longer exist, but was certainly around until the mid 1900's at least.
Whether the awarder was a Ms Burgess or that is a description of Burgess Brothers is not clear. The Burgess family name is well known in Tasmania, they may well have contributed to this prize to honour the skills and contribution that Tasmania's returned servicemen made to the war effort.
The craftsmanship is superb, both in the manufacture of the award itself, as well as the engraving on the reverse.
