Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of the Cook Islands, each 2004 dated coin portrays a memorable railway journey. To quote the official literature: "In railway terms, greatness can pertain to the historical significance of a route in the 19th and early 20th centuries, pioneering transcontinental railways helped build nations in the Americas and the Antipodes.
It can also relate to the eminence of a particular locomotive. Engineering innovation has continuously pushed the limits of rail speed, power and efficiency, and locomotives that achieve a quantum leap in performance. Greatness is also implied by the crossing of remarkable landscape. Drawing on these ideas for inspiration,The Perth Mints Great Rail Journeys of the World depicts five unforgettable experiences."
The five rail journeys are:
The Japanese Bullet Train (aka Shinkansen, make sure you get an o-bento if you ever go on one);
The Trans-Australian Railway;
The Flying Scotsman;
The Canadian Pacific; and
The Santa Fe.
The obverse bears the Raphael Maklouf portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
