Gilt Dragon Shipwreck Coins image

The Gilt Dragon was a “jacht” of the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C.) that wrecked off the coast of Western Australia in 1656, it was only the second to land with a known quantity of silver coins on board.

Although the wreck of the Gilt Dragon has been studied in detail since 1963, the mystery surrounding its survivors remains as strong as ever - they were among the first Europeans to live on the Australian continent.

The coins they carried are arguably among Australia's earliest coins.
