This was a treasured example of a proud event in WA history.
This attractive medallion is very rarely available to collectors - not only was the original mintage tiny, but those that have been kept by the recipients or their families are also very tightly held.
Glenn Burghall is a Perth numismatist who was captured by the rich history of this medallion, his exhaustive research led to a two-part article that has been published on the Perth Mint’s website.
For mine, Glenn’s article is one of the most entertaining and educating articles on any Australian numismatic item - that it is on a Western Australian theme is an added bonus.
Click here to read the first section of Glenn's article on the Perth Mint website.
Subsequent to that article being published, Glenn has determined the following:
"889 struck (from the West Australian's report on the Imperial Mint's 60th annual report), and 663 issued, of these 320 went to the Centenary Committee, 210 sold by the banks, and 133 sold by the Mint.
Five silver medals were donated to the winning competitors in the Children's events at the Labour Day Sports event. These were donated by the Centenary Celebrations Committee.
The Committee also made one hundred silver medals available to the Royal Agricultural Society to be awarded to section champions at the Centenary Royal Show. These medals were supplied in a blue presentation case (an additional cost of 3/-), and not distributed until January 1930.
Every match-winner at the King's Prize and Centenary Rifle Shooting Event was also presented with a silver centenary medal.
It is also reported that three silver medals were presented to debutantes at Mary’s Mount College Ball, and the "Belle" received an inscribed medal.
Still to be verified though is whether the expressed desire to provide silver medals to the 10 oldest Western Australians came about. The meeting minutes record that the idea was certainly approved by the Executive Committee. The task of identifying recipients was given to Deputy Master Corbet and the Mint. Corbet wrote to the papers asking for readers to provide details of the State's oldest residents. He provided lists to the papers and they published the lists, usually on a fortnightly basis, commencing on 23/04/29. This is an area that needs a lot more work."
I don't know that I particularly agree with Glenn's comment that the subject needs a lot more work, as he's covered it in far more detail than most would expect. I definitely agree that the story is well worth exploring further.
This particular example remains in honest condition - as the images here show, it clearly has been handled and shown numerous times over the years - there is wear evident across the King's portrait while the reverse remains largely intact.
It is an affordable example of a significant Western Australian memento.
