This early Georgian crown has been superbly struck, has a wonderful patina and minimal wear.
King George I was the first English monarch from the house of Hanover, which resulted in several changes to England’s coins:
- The German titles of the King appear in the reverse legend;
- One of the reverse shields represents the arms of Brunswick-Luneburg (featuring lions, just below the date); and
- The title of FIDEI DEFENSOR (defender of the faith) appears for the first time on this coin.
Another interesting aspect of this coin is that the provenance of the silver used in production is represented by the roses and plumes in the devices - these symbols indicate that the silver came from the archaically-titled "Company for smelting down Lead with Pitcoale and Seacoale".
This particular coin has far sharper details than seen on crowns of this date - when comparing the amount of detail that this coin has with others they have graded at the same level, it appears that PCGS have marked down the grade heavily due to the minor recessed area in the planchet in the right obverse field.
It remains a strong example of the largest circulating English silver coin from the start of the 18th century.
