This is an intact example of a historic Australian colonial coin.
Not only is the 1827 penny one of the rarest British pennies issued in the 19th century, but it is unique among the British "token" (i.e. copper and silver) coinage series in that it was struck solely for circulation in Australia.
It is widely believed that the entire mintage of this coin was shipped to Australia (Tasmania, or Van Diemen's Land at that time) in wooden barrels, and that they had sea water sloshing over them for the entire trip.
Once they entered circulation, they stayed there for many decades - both of these facts explain the condition nearly all of these coins are found in.
This particular example was one of a small number that were discovered in a chimney in Campbell (Tasmania) several decades ago. An enthusiastic collector known to the vendor offered to remove the soot that had been deeply embedded on the surfaces of the coin, the unfortunate result is what we see in the images here.
The surfaces may well re-patinate over an extended period of time, exposure to the elements will be required for an extended period of time if that is to happen.
I believe that an 1827 penny is essential in any collection of Australian colonial coins, this is an honest example.
