This 1855 half-sovereign is a solid example of Australia's rarest circulating coin.
The 1855 Sydney half-sovereign is unequivocally Australia's rarest circulating coin.
While there are other Australian coins that are regarded as being rarer, they are not standard coins issued for circulation - patterns, proofs, errors, and varieties aren't considered for this exercise.
Current numismatic research indicates that there are perhaps only 50-60 1855 half sovereigns remaining available to collectors today.
That is an incredibly low number when we consider that some 21,000 were struck for use in the colonial economy of New South Wales more than a century and a half ago.
This particular example has full obverse rims and exhibits a full ear in the portrait of Queen Victoria.
The reverse rims remain full the entire way around, several minor contact marks are evident on either side yet these are commensurate with the grade that has been allocated to it.
Importantly, the coin has a straight planchet, shows clear digits in the all-important date, and retains the full outline of the Queen's portrait.
It remains a solid example of Australia's rarest circulating coin.
