Sorry! This 1856 Sydney Mint Type I Sovereign PCGS AU50 has sold.

1856 Sydney Mint Type I Sovereign PCGS AU50

Obverse: Type I portrait of Victoria to left, date below and legend around

Reverse: “Australia” within wreath

This historic gold coin has much detail remaining in the hairline, and solid rims both sides.

The 1855 Sydney sovereign is prized by collectors for its history - it is the very first official gold coin struck on Australian soil.

The 1856 Sydney Mint sovereign shares exactly the same obverse and reverse designs as the 1855 Sydney sovereign, so it is rightly regarded as being as on a par with the 1855 as the first type of official gold coin struck on Australian soil.

For collectors interested in relative rarity and value, the 1856 sovereign has a certain appeal over and above the 1855 sovereign as a representative of this historic two-year type.

Like so many coins and banknotes issued just after a new denomination or series has begun, the 1856 Sydney Mint sovereign is demonstrably rarer than the coin that preceded it.
