1964 Penny Ragged Planchet Error good EF
Obverse: Bust of Elizabeth II to right, legend around
Reverse: Denomination above date, legend around
Alloy: Copper | Diameter: 30.80mm | Weight: 9.45g
Mintage: 50,590,000
This is the most spectacular error we've acquired locally in ages.
It's only the shape of this coin that has caused it to be unnoticed for 60 years after it was struck - it's retained the original round appearance, so has been able to sit in a home-prepared roll all that time.
From the reverse, it looks like the coin has been struck from a planchet that was at the thinned end of a bar - the design drops off between 5 and 8, and the lip has been pushed up nicely.
From the obverse, we can see there is a larger planchet flaw between 4 and 7, and a portion of the planchet is completely missing.
The coin has some friction on the high points either side, has some deep carbon streaks across the obverse. It retains a pleasing patina, and is a great representation of the pressure the Melbourne Mint staff were under in 1964 to strike more than 50 million pennies!
