This is a superb example of Australia's first decimal commemorative coin.
Following the introduction of decimal currency in 1966, there was keen demand for all types of decimal coins from collectors.
The proof and Uncirculated coin sets dated 1966 were not made available to collectors in February 1966, but were made many months later.
Private companies attempted to step into the breach, and the Goose (Swan) Pattern Dollar was struck in 1967 as a "fantasty" coin, and was sold to collectors via the Coin Review magazine.
The Captain Cook 50 cent coin was finally issued into circulation in 1970, a relatively small number were struck as "specimens", and were sold to collectors in a custom red lucite case.
These coins have a much different appearance to the coins that were struck for circulation - not only are the coins more sharply struck, they have a superb satin finish that has an incredible eye appeal.
Over the years, some of the coins stored in the lucite cases have taken on an attractive rose or light-purple patina, which is simply never seen on a coin struck for circulation.
Although this is by no means the rarest decimal commemorative coin, it is the first one struck, looks fantastic and is very affordable.
