This silver proof marks half a century of TV in Australia.
The proof silver one-dollar coins are the second most popular products that the RAM makes each year (the mint sets have been best sellers for decades), largely due to the unique beauty and appeal of the coins when struck in silver.
There's something about seeing these commemorative designs when they've been struck in pure silver - the frosted relief on a mirrored background makes them stand out really well, and they look far better than they do when (if!) you can get them out of your change.
The design for the 2006 $1 commemorative coin commemorates the passing of 50 years since television was first broadcast in Australia.
Despite the immediate connection that nearly all Australians have to television and the programs it conveys, the design didn't resonate particularly strongly with the collector market when it first came out.
If this low level of interest translated into a lack of primary demand for the coin, it could well go on to being an absolute sleeper.
