This is a complete set of the popular Flying Through Time series.
Released over three years, the Masterpieces in Silver Aviation series acknowledges the proud history and significant contribution to the origins and development of Australian aviation.
The first release honours two historic Australian passenger aircraft - the oldest and the newest.
The Avro 504K
After successful service over Europe during World War I and as a training and private use plane, Qantas took delivery of its first aircraft the Avro 504K in 1921. This single-engine wooden structured bi-plane carried two passengers and was used for joy flights, air taxi services and promoted the future advantages of air transport to thousands of Australians.
The Airbus A380
The largest passenger jet ever built carrying between 500 to 800 passengers, with a cruising speed of 900 km/h.
This true giant of the air is 73 m in length, with a 79 m wingspan and a total weight of 540,000 kg.
Designers claim it will actually increase efficiency, use less fuel and generate less noise; Qantas introduced the Airbus A380 to its fleet of commercial aircraft in late 2008.
The second release honours two Australian passenger aircraft that completed milestones in Australian aviation history - the Constellation L749 and the DeHavilland DH 86.
Constellation L749
The 1947 Lockheed Constellation L749 was the first Australian airline to fly en-route from Sydney to London, making six stops and taking 55 hours to complete. Today this same destination takes passengers less than 24 hours. Known affectionately as ‘Connie’ this aircraft was easily recognised by its three-tailed design and dolphin-shaped fuselage.
DeHavilland DH 86
The establishment of the Empire Air Mail service in 1933 prompted the Australian Government to commission a new aircraft. On January 14 1934, only four months later, the DeHavilland DH 86 made its first flight. The aircraft flew the Singapore – Darwin leg of the mail route for Qantas while Holymans Airways of Tasmania flew the Bass Straight leg. The original single-pilot layout and fuselage were later redesigned with a duel-pilot nose to combat pilot fatigue over long stretches.
The third and final release for this set in 2010 continued the celebration of aeroplanes throughout Australia’s aviation history, the Boeing 747 and the S.25 Sandringham.
The coins, case, outer shipper and certificate are all included and remain in excellent condition.
