Australia 2008 Silver Proof Coin Set International Year of the Planet
Purity: 99.99% Weight: 148.54g Nett: 4.78ozt
Mintage: 6,500
This scarce silver proof set contains the 2 commemorative coins struck for this year.
Australia has been producing proof year sets ever since decimal currency was introduced in 1966. Proof coins are the same as those we see in our change, but are struck with specially prepared machinery on specially prepared blanks - the designs always stand out magnificently.
The RAM decided to add an exclusive product to their range in 2003 - the fine silver proof set. Housed in a hand-made jarrah case, the set includes each of the coins seen in the standard proof set struck in pure silver.
There's something about seeing these commemorative designs when they've been struck in pure silver - the frosted relief on a mirrored background makes them stand out really well, and they look far better than they do when (if!) you can get them out of your change.
The Royal Australian Mint adopted the United Nations' International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) as the theme for its 2008 Proof Coin Set. The aim of the 2008 International Year of Planet Earth was apparently "to demonstrate ways in which Earth sciences can help future generations meet the challenges involved in ensuring a safer and more prosperous world."
The 2008 Proof Set contains a commemorative $1, a commemorative 20 cent coin and standard $2, 50c, 10c and 5c pieces.
The $1 reverse represents the impact of climate change with an intricate design symbolising the evolving landscape, the effects of human activity, and sediment layers hiding precious ground-water below.
The 20 cent reverse features powerful images of tsunami, floods, plate movement and salinity, reminding us of the impact geological issues has on our survival.
