The rising gold price meant that many dormant gold mines in West Australia became economical again in the late 1980s, the increased gold output caused the Perth State Government to work on the idea of re-opening the Perth Mint, which had not produced coins for the better part of a decade by that time.
The first gold coins produced by the Perth Mint featured a series of famous natural gold nuggets on the reverses of the coins, and this theme was continued through until 1988.
A new series of reverse designs were released in 1989, featuring kangaroos. The Perth Mint’s gold kangaroo coins are among the most popular gold bullion coins in the world today.
This particular gold coin is one of a very small number that features the M7 privy mark on the reverse. That privy indicates it was part of the "Magnificent 7" series of coins, which included six other popular gold coins produced by other international mints.
