Superb style, a wonderful example of Hellenistic portraiture.

Lysimachus was a personal bodyguard to Alexander the Great. He served alongside him during the campaigns against Persia, and is said to have distinguished himself in India. After Alexander's death in 323BC, Lysimachus was appointed strategos (general) over Thrace and the Chersonesos, the area better known to Australians today as the Gallipoli peninsula.

In that position, Lysimachus was one of several regional diadochi (successors of Alexander) who allied and battled with each other for territorial control - the conflict between them eventually led to Alexander's empire being broken up.

In 309BC, Lysimachus founded his capital Lysimachia in a commanding situation on the ground that connects the Chersonesos with the mainland.

In 306BC, he assumed the title of King, and ruled over Thrace, Asia Minor and Macedonia. After a series of alliances and conflicts, territorial losses and gains in the years that followed, Lysimachus was eventually killed in battle against another successor of Alexander's successors, Seleucus in 281BC.

The best of the coinage of Lysimachus can be rated among the most attractive of all Greek coinage, and generally features a portrait of the deified Alexander on the obverse. In the case of this drachm, Alexander is seen wearing the Horn of Ammon. The Greek goddess of wisdom and Athena is seen on the reverse.
