This is a solid example of Australia's first proof commemorative coin.

The 1927 Canberra florin is Australia’s first commemorative coin - enough of them remain available today to confirm that no Australian was to miss out on their own memento from the opening of the building that was Australia’s democratic heart. It remains everyman’s coin, a poignant link to an era when Australians were aware of their nation’s move to political independence.

There was a great deal of newspaper coverage on the Canberra florins stuck for circulation, however no news at all was published regarding Australia’s second commercially available proof coin.

Research by John Sharples indicates that the proof Canberra florin had a mintage of 400 coins, and that they were sold “…without a case for two shillings and sixpence.” Subsequent research by Vince Verheyen, to be published in a forthcoming book on Australia's pre-decimal proof coinage, indicates that the actual mintage figure could be as low as 200 coins. This is in line with the opinion of Peter Hutchinson, an experienced dealer in pre-decimal proof coins, who has also stated a belief that “The number of coins available on the market today would suggest that somewhere between 150 and 300 coins were sold.”

The Great Depression followed just a few years after these coins were struck, which was a period of hardship that would have tested the resolve of all but the most determined numismatists.

The proof Canberra florins that remain available to collectors today tend to fall into three main categories when it comes to their appearance - toned, original surfaces, and impaired.

Impaired proof coins make up the largest class of Canberra proof florin - many have been damaged or impaired over time by poor storage or handling.

A small number of the Canberra florins that remain in existence feature an blue peripheral patina that is very attractive to certain collectors. These coins were no doubt all stored in a similar manner, just how and by whom is open to debate.

The final class of Canberra proof florin has original fields that are devoid of any tone at all, such as this coin. As we can readily imagine, it is incredibly difficult to store a valuable silver coin such as a Canberra proof florin in an inert environment for an extended period of time.

The fact that PCGS has graded this coin clearly indicates that it has original surfaces in their opinion. The designated grade of PR64 takes into account the light marks that are evident on the obverse.

We sold the equal finest known proof Canberra florin several years ago - that coin was graded PCGS PR67, it sold for more than $40,000.

This particular example isn't of the same calibre obviously, however at the same time, it clearly isn't the same price.

Many of the cheaper Canberra florins that are sold via auction have not been graded by PCGS, and most have impaired surfaces of some kind. Despite the designations allocated by the auctioneers that handle them, a number of those coins are not proofs at all!

While this particular coin is lightly marked on the obverse, it has great eye appeal on the reverse, has been independently assessed as being a genuine proof and with original surfaces, and is priced accordingly.
