Canada's first numismatic collection, contains slightly less than a full kilogram of pure silver.
Many Canadian numismatists state that Canada's first true numismatic collection was the Olympic Five and Ten Dollar coins struck for the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
It was a very ambitious program that began in February 1973. At the behest of the Federal Government (led by then-Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau), it was agreed that the coins would help finance and also commemorate the 1976 Summer Olympics.
The plan was to have thirty coins, twenty-eight silver coins with face values of $5 and $10, and two gold coins - this was the first time that the RCM issued coins with face values of $5 and $10.
These coins would be categorized into seven series with each series configured into four coin sets contain two five dollar coins and two ten dollar coins.
The set of silver coins that we have at present contains all 28 coins released, each of the seven sets are housed in the original individual presentation cases they were issued in.
The $5 silver coins include 0.7227 ozt fine silver, while the $10 silver coins include 1.4454 ozt fine silver. The total silver weight of the 28 coins is 30.35ozt - just shy of a full kilogram.
The seven series of silver coins were based on the following broad themes:
* Geographic
* Olympic Motifs
* Early Canadian Sports
* Olympic Track and Field Sports
* Olympic Summer Sports
* Olympic Team and Body Contact Sports
* Olympic Souvenirs
All of the coins remain in excellent condition for their age, as do the presentation cases and the certificates.
