Diameter: 25mm
Weight: 4.63g
Believed to have been recovered from the wreck of the Emdenby a member of the HMAS Sydney crew.
The SMS Emden was a ship in the German Imperial Navy that sank off the Cocos Islands afer being engaged by the Royal Australian Navy_Ôs HMAS Sydney in November1914.
Prior to meeting HMAS Sydney, the Emden had been successfully raiding Allied ships and bases across the Indian Ocean - her crew had captured no less than two dozen ships.
The meeting of the Emden and the Sydney became known as __The Battle of the Coral Sea_, and is regarded as Australia_Ôs first naval engagement.
Australian servicemen were able to recover a number of artefacts from the wreck of the Emden, and it is believed that many of the Canteen tokens in collector_Ôs hands today were recovered from the wreck in the days that shortly followed the battle.
Collectibles such as this are a direct link to Australia_Ôs proud military history.
