Hungary 1946 Egymillliard B-Pengo Pick#137 PMG 64EPQ
This is the highest denomination banknote ever printed anywhere in the world.
The highest episode of hyperinflation ever recorded anywhere in the world was in Hungary in 1946, where the daily inflation rate peaked at 207% in July 1946.
This particular note was printed in June 1946, and has a face value of 1 Sextillion pengo, which in real number terms looks like this:
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.
Another note with a slightly lower face value was printed and issued by the Hungarian government at around the same time, it had a face value of 100 million trillion pengos, which in real number terms looks like this:
100,000,000,000,000,000,000.
This particular example remains in excellent condition - Paper Money Guaranty has independently assessed it as being in Choice Uncirculated condition, with Exceptional Paper Quality.
The study of hyperinflation shows us the extremes that governments and economies can push their currencies to if they are not held in check by prudence and long-term thinking, and just what is required for a nation's long-term financial stability.
Steve Hanke is Professor of Applied Economics and Founder & Co‐Director of the Institute for Applied Economics, Global Health, and the Study of Business Enterprise at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Hanke has studied hyperinflation for decades, his research has arrived at an objective definition of exactly what hyperinflation is, how it is recorded and the numerous episodes over which it has occurred.
