Selling a Large Collection

For someone who isn't familiar with coins, we know that the responsibility of selling a large and valuable collection can be daunting.

When it comes to selling their collection, experienced collectors will lean on their years of technical knowledge, robust negotiating skills, contacts and confidence to make the right choice.

If someone else has to take that task on, they often have little of the specialised experience needed to make the transaction smooth and hassle-free and often don't know who they should approach.

There are several different ways a large and valuable collection of coins or notes can be sold - directly to collectors, outright to a dealer or via auction are just a few.

At Sterling & Currency, we've spent close to three decades refining our methodical approach to appraising and buying large coin collections. It might not be right for every single collection, but we believe it works well for the people we work with.

We start by committing to identifying and appraising each item in the collection to a standard that an independent expert would be satisfied with. This means no games or silly business - if there's a coin in a collection worth $20,000 a vendor isn't aware of, we have the expertise to find it and will have no problems letting them know exactly what it's worth.

That's a solution that appeals to a lot of folks, and the most common question we hear is, "Great, where do I start?"

When dealing with hundreds of items, in our experience, the first step isn't valuation, it's organisation.

A disorganised collection can lead to missed value, so we begin by grouping items in a collection by whatever criteria work best. As an example, we might start by grouping items by country, denomination or date before any formal appraisal begins.

The initial organisation is only the beginning. To give you an insight into one way you can approach selling a large collection of coins, we've prepared a guide, "How We Handle Selling a Large Collection of Coins." It'll walk you through each step of the process we follow and will let you know what you can expect if you choose to work with us.
