This is a scarce pair of Australia's 1st $1 stars.
When decimal currency was first introduced to Australia in 1966, huge quantities of coins & paper notes were produced to ensure that activity in the Australian economy didn't skip a beat following the change to dollars and cents.
Star replacement notes were only ever issued to replace errors in production, and as the R71s was on issue for just two years between 1966 and 1968, just 535,000 were printed.
Compare that number to the 130,210,000 printed of the standard R71, and you can see why these star notes are so keenly sought by dedicated collectors.
This particular pair of notes remains in excellent quality - they don't quite meet the Uncirculated designation they were given when they were offered for sale via auction in 2001, as each note has a clear centre fold to the side of the metallic thread, and a light teller flick is evident on the right hand side.
Decimal star notes are always scarce in consecutive pairs or runs - they are so scarce that collectors at that time often needed to extract them from separate bundles in order to make a pair.
the paper is completely crisp and original, it has just one centre bend evident.
