This is an impeccable set of Australia's first decimal proof coins.
The introduction of decimal currency in 1966 was a significant event in Australia's transition to a truly independent nation.
This major change meant that not only was the Imperial system of pounds, shillings and pence left behind, but all of the new reverse designs seen on Australia's coins featured timeless depictions of Australia's unique native flora and fauna.
Proof coins are the same as those we see in our change, but are struck with specially prepared machinery on specially prepared blanks - the designs always stand out magnificently.
The 1966 proof set is unique in several ways - it is the only one to feature a round (and silver) 50¢ piece and is the only one not issued in a sealed plastic container.
As a result, nearly all of the 1966 proof coin sets that remain available to collectors today have spotted or tarnished coins - sets that include each coin still in pristine condition command a significant premium.
As the description for this set indicates, the coins included remain in impeccable condition. Each coin has been independently assessed by PCGS as being just one point away from perfection, which is incredible when we think of the age these coins have. They look absolutely fantastic in the hand, and are a joy to handle.
This set a great result that can be achieved without the patience and frustration so many other collectors have surely had while working to build a set of this standard.
The light blue case the coins were issued in also remains in incredible condition. Not perfect, but it was clearly very well preserved by the previous owner.
It is a superb memento of the introduction of decimal currency to Australia.
