Australia 1985 Proof Coin Set - Damaged Packaging
Obverse: Elizabeth II to right, legend around
Reverse: Circulating coin designs
This is the first Australian proof set to include a 1 dollar coin.
Australia has been producing proof year sets ever since decimal currency was introduced in 1966.
Coin collecting was in a boom period in the early 1980's, proof sets were particularly popular.
Proof coins are the same as those we see in our change, but are struck with specially prepared machinery on specially prepared blanks - the designs always stand out magnificently.
The Australian one dollar coin was introduced to the general public part way through 1984, while the proof set was introduced earlier in the year - the 1985 proof set is the first to include a $1 coin.
The Machin portrait of Elizabeth II was seen to be a little dated by 1985, so the switch was made to the more modern portrait by Raphael Maklouf.
Special Note:
Sometimes we buy in individual coins or sets that don't meet the quality expectations that collectors have - sometimes the outer boxes are crushed or missing, other times a previous owner has written on the outer boxes.
If you buy one of these sets, you should not expect the packaging to be in as-issued condition - you should expect it to be bashed about!
The coins included in these sets are generally unaffected by any issues with the packaging, so if you're looking to open some sets up to access the individual coins, these should be fine.
