So popular it sold out quickly, and it's remained in strong demand ever since.
In 2004, the Perth Mint released this silver-proof commemorative coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Australia's Mawson Station, in Antarctica.
Founded in 1954 in the Australian Antarctic Territory, Mawson Station was named after the geologist and explorer Sir Douglas Mawson, who helped establish Australia's tradition for scientific, geographic and hydrographic research during his major Antarctic expeditions between 1911 and 1931.
Mawson Station is listed on the Register of the National Estate and is symbolic of a large part of Australias presence in the highest, driest, coldest and windiest continent in the world.
The coin portrays an Emperor Penguin with its chick, symbolic of two colonies living near the station.
The coin is struck from 99.9% pure silver in proof quality with colour incorporated in the reverse design, with a limited worldwide release of only 7, 500 coins.
All coins are individually packaged in a blue lacquered metal presentation case, accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
