This is the first coin in what has become a hugely popular series around the world.
2009 saw the rebirth of sovereign production at the Perth Mint - the 2009 proof sovereign was the first to be struck at the Perth Mint since 1931.
The Perth Mint's reputation for faultlessly producing attractive precious metal coins to a high standard remains firmly in place, as demand for the 2009 proof sovereign shows.
Orders for the Perth Mint's proof sovereigns now came in from collectors right around the world, either as stand-alone collectibles or as an adjunct to a collection of Australian sovereigns struck for circulation.
The reverse of the 2009 sovereign shows the seven-pointed Federation star above the Australian Commonwealth Coat of Arms, which is in turn supported by a kangaroo and an emu.
A spray of Australia’s national floral emblem (the golden wattle) is behind the crest, a scroll emblazoned with "AUSTRALIA" is below.
It's interesting to see the link between the acacia on the reverse of this coin, and the floral spray used on the obverse of the Type II Sydney Mint sovereigns.
It would seem that the stability of the reverse design featured on the coins in this series is a real advantage - it is now a tried and true design that collectors are able to rely on from year to year.
The original certificate is included with the coin.
