2010 Fifty Cent Proof Coin Set 150th Anniversary of the Melbourne Cup
Selectively Gold-Plated Fine Silver
Mintage: 5,000 sets
This incredibly popular set was sold out before it was even released.
2010 was the 150th anniversary of the Melbourne Cup - one of the largest sporting events on the Australian calendar, and one of the most prestigious horse races in the world.
The 1861 race had seventeen starters and was run before a crowd of 4,000 spectators. In 2010, it was broadcast to an estimated audience of around 700 million people worldwide.
This coin set was released as part of a year-long series of celebrations, and was available just 2 months before the 2010 race.
The designs on the reverse of the coins in the selectively gold plated silver set feature two of the most enduring emblems of the Melbourne Cup race:
The current Melbourne Cup trophy that all Australian jockeys, trainers and horse owners aspire to own. A new trophy is struck each year, and becomes the property of the winning owner. The present trophy is made by Hardy Brothers, hand beaten from individual 34 pieces of 18-carat gold weighing a total of 1.65 kg. The whole production process takes over 200 hours from start to finish.
Phar Lap - the favourite in three consecutive Melbourne Cups. Phar Lap, was of course the most famous horse in the world of his day, and won the 1930 Melbourne Cup at 11/8 odds on, the shortest priced favourite in the history of the race. Phar Lap dominated Australian racing during a distinguished career, winning a Melbourne Cup, two Cox Plates, an AJC Derby, and 19 other weight for age races.
The mintage of the set was restricted to just 5,000, and was completely sold out to wholesale distributors nearly a week before it was released to the general public!
The two fifty-cent coins included in it are the standard size and dimensions of those that we see in our change, but have been struck to proof quality in fine silver, and have been selectively gold plated.
This set is a superb and exclusive memento of one of Australia's most popular sporting events.
The coins, case, outer shipper, and certificate are all included and remain in excellent condition.
