China 1983 8 Coin Proof Set Year of the Pig
This incredibly scarce proof coin set from China remains in excellent condition.
Strange as it may seem, the People's Republic of China (PRC) only began making sets of coins for the collector market in 1979 - some 30 years after the Communist Revolution of 1949.
Coinage and paper currency would not have been as readily available in Communist China as it was in Western capitalist countries over the same period (nor would it have been used in the same manner and to the same degree). Krause lists very few circulating coins as having been struck by the PRC prior to 1980 (just the 1, 2 and 5 fen), so it's hardly surprising there was not a burgeoning government-sponsored numismatic industry in China at that time.
Anecdotal reports are that the few proof and uncirculated coin sets that were produced between 1979 and the early 1980's were not actually sold to collectors, but were most often presented as gifts to visiting dignitaries.
Adding to the appeal that these sets have, the mintage figures for many of the numismatic coin sets of the PRC issued since 1979 are simply not known - planned mintage figures are known, however many sources believe the actual number produced each year was far lower than the planned mintage figure.
The coins themselves, and the inner sleeve they are contained in, remain in fantastic condition.
On the rare occasion when these sets are offered for sale on eBay, they are always keenly contested.
I can think of a few billion reasons why a savvy collector might put a set like this away.
