This is the rarest date in the 1/2oz gold Panda series.
The following information has been taken from "The Gold and Silver Panda Buyers Guide", written by Peter Anthony:
"The 1998 50 Yuan 1/2 oz. gold Large Date Panda is a standout coin in the Panda series. 1998 has become perhaps the most sought-after year for gold Pandas. All the coins from this year are key coins and the 50 Yuan is considered the rarest of all. In the wake of the Asian financial crisis demand for gold Pandas plummeted and many have been reported melted.
There are two major varieties of the 1998 gold Pandas: Small Date and Large Date. The 1998 50 Yuan gold Large Date is a Shenyang Mint coin. The two versions are not hard to tell apart; the numerals of the Small Date are much smaller than those of the Large Date. The total mintage for both varieties is a very low 4,168. The actual number of B.U. condition that that exist today is even less than that. Between the two varieties the Large Date variety is considerably scarcer. "
