This particular countermark was well struck on an 1808 8 Reales coin.
St. Croix was under Danish rule from 1733 to 1917, although it was heavily influenced by neighboring British and French colonies in the Caribbean. The Leeward Islands included British colonies like Antigua, St. Kitts, and Nevis, which were close trading partners with St. Croix.
During the 18th century, Caribbean colonies faced chronic shortages of official currency. They often relied on imported coins, particularly Spanish silver dollars (pieces of eight), which were commonly used throughout the Americas and the Caribbean due to their consistent silver content and wide circulation.
In order to make these foreign coins legal tender, local governments would counter-stamp them with marks that indicated their value in local currency. This practice was common in regions where multiple colonial powers were operating, each with its own currency system.
