Struck during a visit by the Royal Family to the Royal Mint.
This coin must definitely be considered to be one of New Zealand's rarest coins - it is the only example that is legally available for collectors to own!
5 were struck during a visit by the Royal Family to the Tower Mint in London in December 1937 - 3 are still held by the Royal Trust; the example held by the Royal Mint Museum has been declared missing, this is the only other example in existence.
As the provenance above shows, this particular coin was formerly owned by the Deputy Master of the Royal Mint, Sir Robert Johnson.
For the first time in more than eight decades, a book recently published by the Royal Collection Trust and Spink & Son provides an unequivocal explanation of the background this incredible coin has. "Monarchy, Money and Medals" outlines the details of the visit and explains the importance the coin has to others from the same era.
