New Zealand (Bank of NSW) 1870~1890 5 Pound Unissued Specimen Note Pick# PS147 about Unc
Domicile: Dunedin
This is a rare and attractive representative of the type of notes that circulated in New Zealand prior to 1934.
Dunedin became wealthy during the Central Otago Gold Rush, beginning in the 1860s. In the mid-1860s, and between 1878 and 1881, it was New Zealand's largest urban area.
Although the population of other cities has surpassed Dunedin to make it now the seventh-largest urban area in New Zealand, it is still considered one of the four main cities of New Zealand for historic, cultural, and geographic reasons.
The Bank of New South Wales was established in Sydney in 1817 and opened for business in New Zealand on June 11th, 1861.
This is the third type of note issued by the Bank of New South Wales in New Zealand and was in use between 1870 and 1890.
This particular note remains in attractive condition - the paper quality remains entirely original, there is some light tone evident in the left-hand margin on the front.
The simultan print is strong and clear, just one minor bend is evident on the left hand side.
It is a strong example of the type of notes used in New Zealand prior to the establishment of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in 1934.
We have seen just one example offered for sale via auction in the past 5 years.
