Set of 3 Contemporary Replica JIM (Oceania) Notes good EF
One Pound; One Shilling and Half Shilling (No Ten Shilling replicas were printed)
Printed in Brisbane in 1943, production of these was quickly canned once the Commonwealth government learned of them.
The Japanese Invasion Money (JIM) printed for Oceania was first seen by Australians in October 1942 - samples of each note were sent to the Commonwealth Bank by members of the Australian Army.
The Note Printing Branch of the Commonwealth Bank determined that the notes had been printed "...by an offset lithographic press on good quality un-watermarked rag paper."
Replicas of those notes were first sighted in Sydney, where they were being sold "...by the Curio shop on the corner of Castlereagh Street and Martin Place." When interviewed by government officials, the owner of the store advised that he had bought the notes from a trader in Toowoomba named Brookman, and that he understood they were being sold in Brisbane.
Further investigations revealed that the notes had been printed by Economy Printers Pty Ltd for the Bulldog Casket Shop. The notes printed by Economy Printers had the term "REPLICA" included on the back of each note. Other replicas had also been seen without the term "REPLICA" included on the back of each note.
An internal report by the Note Issue Department advised that the printer had used "...no more than 5 pounds of paper for the printing of these notes." Whether the printer continued to print replicas is not clear, what is known is that the Curio Shop handed over all their unsold replicas.
These particular notes remain in excellent, but not mint, condition. The one pound replica has a vertical fold and several light handling marks; while the one shilling and half shilling replicas also have one vertical fold each.
It isn't hard to imagine that these notes would have been the subject of quite a lot of interest when first seen by the Australian public in 1944, this set remains a true memento from the dark days of the Second World War.
