South Africa 1923 Proof Coin Set PCGS PR63 - PR67 With Presentation Case
Obverse: Coronate bust of George V to left, legend around
Mintage: 655
This rare and historic set of South African coins has a strong link to Western Australia.
In October of 1923, Prince and Princess Arthur of Connaught visited the Pretoria Mint; Prince Arthur struck the first Sovereign produced by the Mint. Most of the proof coin sets from South Africa dated 1923 were distributed in plush leatherette cases manufactured for Mappin and Webb - English jewellers that had a branch office in Johannesburg.
The South African Mint and the Rand Refinery has a strong link to Western Australia in the form of Raoul Kahan - one of the most highly-regarded members of the Perth Mint staff. Kahan held senior positions at two of the largest refineries and mints in the world.
He was the first Honours student to graduate from the University of Western Australia’s Department of Chemistry, he served as the Assistant Assayer Perth Mint between 1909 and 1918.
Between 1918 and 1920, Kahan was Deputy Master and Assayer at the Royal Mint in Bombay (India); in 1920 he was the Superintendent a gold refinery for the Transvaal Chamber of Mines in Johannesburg, South Africa (now known as the Rand Refinery); he served as Manager of the gold refinery between 1921 and 1940, and then retired to Perth and a farm at Kojonup (Western Australia) in 1940.
His daughter, Jean Kahan, created a scholarship at the University of Western Australia in honour of her father.
The Rand Refinery is one of the most famous gold refineries in the world - since it first opened in 1921 it has refined over 50,000 tonnes of gold, which is nearly 30% of all the gold that has ever been mined.
The refinery is located within the legendary Witwatersrand gold mining district in Germiston, which is just outside Johannesburg (South Africa).
The refinery’s most famous product is the world-renowned Krugerrand gold bullion coin. More than 60 million Krugerrands have been produced since 1967.
This historic set of coins is not only incredibly rare and beautiful to behold, it has a strong link to Western Australia and includes several coins that PCGS have designated as finest-known examples.
