The 1930 penny is unequivocally Australia's most keenly sought rare coin - almost everyone has heard of it (even if only vaguely), it's been THE coin that all pre-decimal coin collectors have lusted over for decades.
Not only is the 1930 penny incredibly rare, but it also has a history and functional beauty that is unmatched by any other Australian rare coin.
Finding an affordable 1930 penny at the right price and without any strings attached is much harder than a lot of collectors realize.
As you can see from the images, this particular example has strong detail right across both sides and retains an even, tan-coloured patina.
The reverse rims are intact all the way around, and there is a strong level of detail in the inner beaded circle and the lower scroll - these characteristics confirm that the coin was struck well. Pay close attention to the reverse denticles just to the right of the "F" in "OF", you'll note a small dot between 2 of them. Research by Fred Lever has shown that this characteristic demonstrates it was struck with reverse die S74.
The King's crown in the obverse is evenly worn - the band in the base of the King's crown remains clear from end to end, 6 pearls can also be seen. The surfaces exhibit a rich and glossy chocolate patina, it is truly pleasing to see in the hand.
All of this confirms this truly is a solid example of Australia's most keenly sought rare coin.
