Specimen bearer bonds such as this are incredibly scarce in Australia.
A bearer bond is a type of financial instrument that the average person never encounters - I'd describe them as a certificate that captures the terms and conditions of a loan agreement between an investor and an organization such as a country or a company. Each interest payment due under the loan is represented by a coupon that is attached to the printed security.
Bearer bonds differ from other bonds in that they are owned by the person that has possession of them (the bearer), rather than by a registered owner.
For that reason, bearer bonds are often featured in Hollywood movies (think Die Hard) as an incredibly high-value and untraceable form of wealth.
The bearer bonds that this specimen related to were issued in 1990, and would have been fully redeemed in 1993. A 15.25% interest rate would definitely be welcome in 2022!
I've never seen a privately-issued specimen bearer bond for an Australian institution before, and believe this to be incredibly scarce.
I also believe it'd make a great talking point in a financial services office - a great conversation starter.
