The Perth Mint Australian Lunar Series gold and silver coins commemorate the Chinese Lunar calendar: gold coins were first struck in 1996, silver coins began in 1999. It is now one of the most keenly collected lunar coin series in the entire world.
The Perth Mint's bullion coins are exceptional quality, and their proof coins are even better.
This year’s Perth ANDA Money Expo special show product features a superb reverse design marking the Chinese Lunar Year of the Rooster - a coloured rooster, a hen, and three chicks stand within bamboo foliage and flowers. The Chinese character for ‘rooster’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Rooster’ can also be seen.
The birth dates for people ruled by the Chinese Lunar rooster include 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, and 2017.
Those born under the influence of this sign are said to be hardworking, loyal, honest, and sociable.
The coin is of course in a superb quality presentation case, and is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
The last time that the Perth Mint released a 2 ounce silver lunar proof coin in conjunction with an ANDA show was back in 2014 - that coin was a full-colour Horse and also had a mintage of 1,000.
The full-colour reverse coupled with the tiny mintage and affordable price really resonated with collectors - it sold out immediately.
If you're looking for a neat little coin to set aside for someone born in the Year of the Rooster (or perhaps for a child that will be born later in the year), this coin would be great to consider.
